Everybody knows airbags are designed to provide protection to passengers inside the vehicle. But when those safety devices are defective, as in the case of Takata airbags, serious injuries can occur and even lead to death.Exploding Airbags Threatening Thousands of Drivers in Tampa, FL
Recently, the automotive world has been rocked by the massive recall of the airbags manufactured by Takata, the largest supplier of airbag parts in the world. Unfortunately, millions of vehicles in the U.S. have driver’s side airbags with faulty Takata part. According to experts, the problem involves defective inflator and propellant devices that deploy improperly in the event of a collision. The Takata airbags can rupture and explode with excessive force, spraying metal shrapnel at drivers and passengers. The metal shrapnel has already caused serious facial and bodily injuries to drivers over the world and has even resulted in deaths. 5 deaths and 139 injuries have been reported and attributed to the faulty device in the last decade. Takata says the airbags are only prone to fail in climates with high humidity. That’s why this issue is a major concern for those that reside in Florida. The compound used in the airbag that triggers the expansion of the airbag is adversely affected by the high humidity.List of Vehicle Makes and Models Affected by the Airbag Recall

Other airbags have been known to deploy when the driver starts the vehicle or simply while they are driving, with no collision. In both cases, severe injuries can occur. When an airbag deploys, the deflation begins immediately after the gas escapes through vent holes in the fabric. The main purpose of an airbag is to be fully inflated before the passenger falls into it during a crash. Otherwise, serious injuries occur. When airbags, which can travel at speeds up to 175- 200 mph, hit occupants prior to full inflation, severe facial injuries result. Airbag defects can include the following:- Overly “aggressive” airbags – airbags that deploy too fast and too far into the occupant space cause severe head injuries, brain damage and in the worst scenario, even partial or complete decapitation.
- Oversized airbags – airbags that are way too large and deploy too far into the occupant space can result in the same injuries as above.
- Untethered airbags – airbags that break loose from their holdings will often cause injuries to occupants.
- Low deployment threshold airbags – airbags that deploy in a low-speed crash will most likely cause injuries to occupants they would not have experienced had the air bag not deployed.
- System malfunctions – they often occur when a defective electrical system or sensors cause an airbag to deploy, either on ignition, or when the car hits a simple pothole. Such system malfunctions can also result in an airbag failing to deploy when supposed to.
- Failure to deploy.
- Late deployment – by deploying too late, the airbag fails to protect the occupants.
