Broken Bones
Broken bones are injuries that are most commonly found and discovered immediately in any type of auto or motorcycle accident, slip and fall or other type of accident. The two most common types of broken bones (or fractures) are called displaced fracture and non-displaced fractures.
A displaced fracture is a type of fracture where bones have shifted at the fracture point and will require an open reduction and internal fixation surgery. This means an orthopedic surgeon cuts open the fracture site and attaches either a metal plate secured by screws, or in the case of the longer bones of the leg, a rod inserted through the bone to stabilize it. Sometimes a second surgery may be necessary to remove the hardware used to stabilize these fractures as it is common for them to cause pain, too.
A non-displaced fracture is a fracture for which the bone is broken but has not not shifted away from itself at the fracture point and generally does not require a device attachment to the bone to stabilize it beyond use of a basic external cast.
These types of procedures can be extremely expensive and have long term effects on the individual involved.
