How is my business eligible for BP oil spill benefits if oil did not hit my area?

The media attention on the Deepwater Horizon disaster was intense, with constant streaming video of the oil spill for three months straight.  As a result, BP has acknowledged a “trickle down” effect on the economy of all Florida counties located on the Gulf of Mexico—from the Panhandle down to the Keys, the entire states of Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana, and certain counties in Texas.  Accordingly, if you were in business on the date of the oil spill (April 20, 2010), if your business does not fall within one of the very few exclusions, and if you are located within the areas zoned by the settlement, you could be eligible for benefits under the BP class action settlement even though you may not be able to prove a direct connection to the oil spill as a cause of your business income loss.
