Traffic deaths in the United States have jumped almost 14% this year alone. This is in contrast to a decrease in traffic deaths over the last 5 years. The National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration estimated that approximately 7,630 people have died in the first three months of 2012, up from 6,720 in the first quarter of 2011. Some of the reasons for this are attributable to the unseasonably warm weather and low gas prices that may have caused people to drive more.
When someone dies in a vehicle crash it is generally one of the most life changing events that can happen to the victim’s family and loved ones. When deaths occur that are sudden and unexpected, it is very difficult to move forward and get past the pain of the loss. Grief over the loss of a loved one doesn’t just stop one day, and is more than not being able to see, speak or be near your loved one. It can also involve severe financial hardships, especially if the victim was the main breadwinner for the family. More often than not, the main breadwinner is also the one who provided health insurance for the entire family, resulting in the victim’s family being unable to pay the huge medical bills from treatment the deceased received prior to passing away.
The unexpected death of a loved one can be hardest on the victim’s children, especially if they are older than 6 or 7 years old. By that age, children have established a bond with that parent or loved one. The sudden loss of that parent or loved one can have a life-changing and damaging affect on children. Teenagers also have a hard time coping with the loss of a loved one, especially when the accident is related to a traffic crash. Please remember: It is important for the grieving family members and others to have patience with one another. They all need time to heal, and – in some ways — the healing never ends. The hurt will come and go for the rest of their lives. Those who have lost the ones they love deserve our patience and kindness.
